We hope all our parishioners have heard about and had the chance to attend one or more of the concerts held during the last few months. Other musical activities are already being planned for the fall and early 2008.
Organizing these cultural events is the responsibility of the St. Andrew Armenian Church Cultural Committee, a group authorized by the Parish Council in late 2002. The purpose of the committee is to showcase Armenian talent and to support the church. Most of the profits earned go directly to the church; a small reserve is retained to facilitate arranging upcoming activities.
The first concert of 2003 was on Sunday, February 16, at St. Andrew entitled, ?The World?s Most Beloved Arias and Duets.? This special Valentine?s concert was performed by members of the Bay Shore Lyric Opera Company, featuring our own Jennifer Der Torossian Constantino. Other singers were Liliane Cromer, Delmar McComb, and Jo Vincent Parks. Karine Bassin and Alla Lipkin accompanied. The quality of the singing and the musical selections were outstanding. Papken Der Torossian served as master of ceremonies and generously sponsored the performance. A reception followed in Amerian Hall.
On Saturday, March 29, Lilit Papoyan, a folk singer from Armenia, performed at the Sunnyvale Community Center Theatre to a full house. Her haunting melodies were mainly self-composed. Many of her poetic lyrics were derived from medieval and traditional Armenian sources. She was accompanied by flutist Bai Pham, violinist Howard Rosenberg, and cellist Lee Shahinian. Special thanks go to Dr. Mariam Manoukian, who was instrumental in promoting Lilit?s talents and arranging many details of the evening.Several weeks later, on Palm Sunday, April 13, Bella Darbinian gave a lively concert to a sold-out crowd at St. Andrew. A well-known singer from Armenia, Bella performed both popular and traditional Armenian numbers.
In between selections she entertained the audience with humorous stories. In return, the audience enthusiastically received both her and her talents. Special fans and sponsors of Bella?s concert include Micheal Choupak, Hrair and Armine Kirakossian, Rosanna Ohanjanian, and Dr. Krikor Barsoumian. Thank you to them and to Homenetmen Ani Chapter for organizing the reception which followed in Amerian Hall.
Members of the St. Andrew Armenian Church Cultural Committee thank everyone who has attended these concerts. Your support is vital for our having a dynamic Armenian community and church. We hope you will continue coming to these events and will encourage others to enjoy the high quality of these Armenian artists. In most cases, you can take the music home with you by purchasing CDs or tapes of the performers.
The Cultural Committee welcomes your suggestions for future activities. Your donations of food for receptions are always appreciated. You can contact members through the Church Office or directly.
